  Still Life Group is an open studio, no-instruction event.  Once each month, Terri Harris facilitates an opportunity for artists to practice their art-from-life skills.  All levels of skill are welcome, and any medium can be used.  

  The composition and lighting is a collaborative effort in which we all learn with and from each other.  You are encouraged to bring items that can be added to the still life.  One or two setups, depending on the number of attendees, are available so that all artists can have a good viewpoint.

  This popular, one-day workshop with Ken Roy will focus on the introduction and demonstration of three practical, functional approaches to sketching the figure using personal graphic language, proportion, and landmarks of the body to establish within three to five minutes a line of action, gesture, the point of balance, and the integration of the major masses of the body.  This workshop is for all experience levels, ages 18 and over.  Please note: Anatomically correct illustrations of the human body will be referenced during the workshop.  The model will wear form-fitting clothing.

  Paper: Newsprint, rough or smooth, 12" x 18" or 18" x 24". Pad of 50 sheets. Drawing boards and easels, both floor and table models, will be available if you choose to use them.

  Measuring tool: your drawing implement, a chopstick, or a knitting needle will work fine.

  Drawing implement: your preference of charcoal pencil (2B of 4B), Nitram Fine Art Charcoal or similar product (HB or B),  willow charcoal, pastel pencil or stick (hard), or Cretacolor lead holder, with either sanguine oil or Nero drawing leads. A marker is not a good choice because it will bleed through the paper, and this will make the reverse side unfit for drawing.

  ARTISTS IN ACTION

  Sign up to be one of the "Artists In Action".  Each month on the First Friday of the month the gallery is open late for the downtown Conroe event "Sip and Shop".  As an Artist In Action you will be working on a current project in the gallery for the general public to view.  Any art that you can work on in the gallery is eligible (sculpting, card and jewelry making, painting, etc). This monthly event is limited to 5 artists each month.  Artist must be a CAL member and provide all their own supplies/equipment and clean up when finished.  All sales will go through the CAL system with 20% going to CAL. 

  If you are able to allow people to get hands on with your media of choice that is wonderful.  People are very interested when it comes to artistic creation.

  The goal is to get more visitors in the gallery, sell more of your work and get to know your fellows CAL member in a fun and creative way.

  “Lemons and Forsythia” master study after Cornelia Hernes.
  “This painting is a study I did to try a different approach starting a painting and color application under the mentorship of Cornelia Hernes, the starting process is called “reduction” and consists in start with a very dark underpainting and slowly revealing the lights until the image is completed, then colors are applied in layers keeping the whole structure of the painting since the very beginning.”

  For each $10 donation one ticket will be entered into the raffle.  The winning ticket will be drawn on May 10th at the Artist Reception.  You do not have to be present to win.  Support the arts and win a beautiful piece of art.  Raffle tickets may be purchased on-line or in the gallery at 127 Simonton Street, Conroe, where you can see the piece in person.

  2025 STUDENT AWARDS SHOW

  Conroe Art League will award more than $13,000 at the Student Awards Show scheduled for Saturday, May 10th, at 5:00 PM. As many as eighteen monetary awards may be awarded in the show category. 
  

  In addition to the open show, there will be a $500 award for the Adrianne Gerlach Memorial Art Scholarship for Best Western/Wildlife and an award in the amount of $300 for the Sherry Wagner Memorial Award for the theme Forever Cats.  

  A student does not have to be present to win. (But it would be nice!)

  A student may win only one Student Award, but a student winning a Student Award may also win either the Adrianne Gerlach Memorial Scholarship or the Sherry Wagner Memorial Award. Conversely a student who wins either the Adrianne Gerlach or Sherry Wagner award is also eligible to win a Student Award. For example, the art winning the Adrianne Gerlach Award ($500) could also be awarded 1st place and $3,000.00 in the Student Awards.

  The eligibility of a student is defined as a high school senior (the student does not have to be formally enrolled in an art class), who is attending a Montgomery County public, private or home school. 

  Take-in of the art will be at the art league on Friday, May 9th, from 1p.m. to 5p.m. Artwork must be delivered with a completed registration.  You may print your registration or download the form here.  Student Show Registration 2025.pdf.  Our preference is that you register on-line.  On-line registration closes at 8:00PM on Thursday, May 8th.  After that time please use the printed form (see link above).

  More information about the awards and the reception will be announced as we get closer to the reception.

  Join your fellow artists for our first CAL sponsored bus trip to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.  

  The bus will depart from CAL (127 Simonton) at 10:00am sharp.  Please plan to be there by 9:30 so you can use the restroom, find parking, etc.  Your ticket will include bus transportation to and from the museum, entrance to the museum and a private docent guided tour with headsets provided.   The tour on this trip will be of The Audrey Jones Beck Collection of Impressionism to Post-Impressionism.

   After the tour, visit the gift shop and enjoy lunch at Cafe Leonelli’s (your cost).  Board the bus at 2:00 for your trip back to CAL.

  If you've been wanting to enter the world of art, this class was designed with you in mind.  Your instructor will introduce you to the beautiful medium of acrylic, as well as the materials and the process.  Acrylics are fast-drying, water-soluble, affordable, and vibrant. This a wonderful medium for beginning painters.  CAL will supply you with everything you need to complete your sunflower project, and you will go home with your painting and your supplies so that you can continue to paint.

Fees for diptych (2 pieces comprising one complete work) and triptych (3 pieces comprising one complete work) are based on the above fee scale if the complete work fits within the width listed.  2D art is not to exceed 48 inches in width, 72 inches in height, and maximum weight is 30 pounds.  3D art is not to exceed 30 inches in depth by 30 inches wide and 48 inches high and maximum weight is 40 lbs.  3D art must fit on CAL window tables or pedestals.  Artist agrees that CAL will receive a donation for each piece sold during its exhibition in the Gallery at 20% of the purchase price. Artist will be paid for sold piece(s) within two (2) weeks after the exhibit closes, less the 20% donation amount. CAL will collect sales tax on all sales in the Gallery.  Please Note:  CAL is required to file with the IRS an information return (1099) for each person to whom CAL pays during the tax year at least $600 in sales proceeds and/or prizes and awards.  CAL reserves the right to withhold payment of such amounts unless the recipient provides the required taxpayer identification information through a completed W-9.

  Artist agrees to follow and adhere to all CAL guidelines, procedures, and By-Laws.  Failure to do so may result in removal of membership.

  Any unclaimed artwork/item left after the exhibit take-out date will be removed from the exhibition site and donated/disposed of IF NOT PICKED UP WITHIN 30 DAYS.

  There shall be no soliciting, fundraising, or promoting any organization or group other than CAL or organizations or groups that CAL is a member of.

Fees for diptych (2 pieces comprising one complete work) and triptych (3 pieces comprising one complete work) are based on the above fee scale if the complete work fits within the width listed.  2D art is not to exceed 48 inches in width, 72 inches in height, and maximum weight is 30 pounds.  3D art is not to exceed 30 inches in depth by 30 inches wide and 48 inches high and maximum weight is 40 lbs.  3D art must fit on CAL window tables or pedestals.  Artist agrees that CAL will receive a donation for each piece sold during its exhibition in the Gallery at 20% of the purchase price. Artist will be paid for sold piece(s) within two (2) weeks after the exhibit closes, less the 20% donation amount. CAL will collect sales tax on all sales in the Gallery.  Please Note:  CAL is required to file with the IRS an information return (1099) for each person to whom CAL pays during the tax year at least $600 in sales proceeds and/or prizes and awards.  CAL reserves the right to withhold payment of such amounts unless the recipient provides the required taxpayer identification information through a completed W-9.

  Artist agrees to follow and adhere to all CAL guidelines, procedures, and By-Laws.  Failure to do so may result in removal of membership.

  Any unclaimed artwork/item left after the exhibit take-out date will be removed from the exhibition site and donated/disposed of IF NOT PICKED UP WITHIN 30 DAYS.

  There shall be no soliciting, fundraising, or promoting any organization or group other than CAL or organizations or groups that CAL is a member of.

  Join Argentinian artist Carolina Dalmas for an engaging and liberating artistic experience where you'll harness the power of spontaneity and intention to create compelling pastel artworks. This workshop offers both structured learning and creative freedom, ensuring a rewarding journey into the world of soft pastels.

  During this workshop, we will paint a still life "alla prima" (completing it in one session).  In this way, you will achieve freshness and joy. Instruction will cover composition and lighting of a still life, shapes, value, edges, color harmony, and movement.  

  Carolina creates art with a deep connection to nature.  She encourages her students to observe the world as if they are seeing it for the first time.  Acrylics and pastels are her favorite mediums. Recently, one of her pastel still lifes was awarded first place in the Pastel 100 Competition, hosted by Pastel Journal.

  Transparent watercolor is ideal for paintings that "glow" - a sense of light that comes from inside the painting - like a sunset, a candle, a lamp, a room with a window.  Learn how to use color and value to describe just that - light that appears to come from the paper itself, magically transforming whatever the subject. You will work together on a group painting project to understand basic techniques and ideas and will work on individual paintings as time allows.  Carla will supply the photo reference for the first project but she asks that you find some photo references that have this sense of light so that you can work on an individual project.

  Dates/Times: February 13 - 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an hour for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.

  Carla was born and educated in Canada and has lived and worked in the U.S. and Europe. She now resides in Houston, Texas where she continues to paint and teach. While earning her BA in Fine Art and Art History and her Bachelor of Education, she continued to paint in watercolor and oil.  An education in traditional drawing and printmaking provided her with a solid base in image making. Carla is a signature member of many prestigious organizations. "Painting, for me, is an opportunity to make sense of an increasingly visual world. I get to enjoy the image making process, choosing the contrast, color, and light that suit the subject at hand and the story being told.  It is a pursuit which has its challenges and successes, but it is about the process, the small gains made along the way."

  After a career of supporting the use of technology in education, Carol retired from Texas A&M University to pursue her encore career in photography.  Dr. Henrichs' photography career provided opportunities for her to be a featured speaker for Carnival Cruise Lines, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, Wildlife Expo, and many other organizations.
